Mansfield Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
What is a Foothold Trap?
If you are not familiar with a foothold or a leg-hold trap, this article is for you. A foothold trap is used to restrain foxes, raccoons, wolves, lynx, coyotes, bobcats and other wild animals. These animals can eat scraps of food, damage your insulation, and create large holes in your walls if they manage to make it inside your house. It is important to prevent these animals from causing damage to your properties.
How a Foothold Trap Works
This trap consists of two metals that clamp shot when a trigger is pressed. The trigger is called a pan. It can be a flat square or a circular surface in appearance. It activates the trap when a wild animal steps on it. The trap is commonly made of metal, curved jaws and springs. There is a short chain or a spike that is part of the trap which is used as an anchor to the ground.
Why Use Foothold Traps
A lot of companies produce traps that are humane. The traps have padded clamps instead of a regular steel jaw that prevents injury. These kinds of traps allow relocation of trapped animals from one place to another. Foothold traps allow wildlife conservationists to study how foxes, coyotes, badgers or minks live and reproduce. These conservationists later release these animals back into the wildlife.
Different Kinds of Foothold Traps
The foothold traps are preferred by trappers because they are easy-to-use, effective, and versatile. These are the kinds and style of foothold traps that are commonly used.
Long-spring traps are the first foothold traps that were produced. They can be single or double spring types depending on the animal you wanted to catch. They are not commonly used because of their big sizes and heaviness. You can also use long-spring traps for submersions.
Coil-spring is the most common trap used. The coil spring is used when there’s limited space. They are good for catching coyotes, bobcats, and foxes. They are small compared to the log-spring foothold traps and they are able to catch animals which are known for speed and strength.
Enclosed foothold traps are used for particular animals such as raccoons and opossums. The animal should be able to reach the small chain opening in order to get trapped. This prevents other unwanted animals getting caught in the trap. This particular trap also prevents domestic animals or non-targeted animals to be injured.
What Types of Traps Should You Use?
You should consider your purpose in trapping an animal. Animal size matters in choosing a foothold trap. Foothold traps that are too large can cause unnecessary injuries to small animals. The smaller the foothold trap, the better. Make sure to check your state’s regulations when it comes to trapping animals. If you happen to catch a domestic animal, make sure to set them free immediately. Foothold traps are best for catching land animals. You should be careful when handling trapped animals because they tend to bite. Check your traps regularly so that you can free a domesticated animal as soon as possible.
